Insider’s Scoop | Staff education on infection control

Homecare Insider, October 19, 2015

Editor’s note: This week’s Insider's Scoop is adapted from one of HCPro’s popular home health titles, Home Health Infection Control: A Manual for Compliance and Quality, reviewed by Elizabeth I. Gonzalez, RN, BSN. The complete resource provides all of the information, forms, and tools that an agency needs to ensure it has a compliant infection control program. Care delivered according to infection control guidelines is the most effective tool available for breaking the chain of infection. When implemented properly, infection control practices help to stop the spread of infections and promote safe and effective homecare delivery.

Staff education must meet the needs of both the agency and the people who help it function on a daily basis. Here are some hints for a successful infection control education program:
  • Identify topics to present during orientation and on a regular basis.
  • Develop a plan for the year.
  • Schedule in-services at different times to encourage participation and meet the needs of employees.
  • If your agency has several locations, schedule sessions at each of the sites.
  • Choose instructor(s) who are familiar with the topics and experienced in healthcare delivery. They must teach the classes using language that suits their audience.
  • Prepare for the sessions. Anyone slated to teach the classes must know and understand infection control principles and practices.
  • Put together an outline and handouts to address important points in an orderly fashion.
  • Incorporate visual aids into the sessions.
  • Focus on agency policies and procedures, as well as specific case studies and examples.
  • Demonstrate techniques.
  • Incorporate practice sessions and return demonstrations.
  • Allow enough time for questions and answers. If you cannot answer a question, research it and post or distribute the answer.
