Putting the final rule into practice: Therapy services and documentation

Homecare Insider, December 13, 2010

The new therapy requirements included in the 2011 PPS final rule are effective April 1, 2011. This delay was intended to allow agencies additional time to transition and comply. These new requirements will affect scheduling, coordination of care, and staff education. In preparation, agencies may find the following tips helpful when planning agency compliance:

  • Consider what your agency is currently doing regarding therapy practice and documentation. Some agencies are already practicing many of the requirements set forth in the final rule.
  • Consider forming a compliance team to plan, educate, and oversee transition and adherence.
  • Immediately focus on education. Educate all therapy staff on the requirements. Education should include full knowledge of the rule and how to document the services.
  • Adhere to a timeframe for compliance. Avoid waiting until the last minute to plan, educate, and put policies into practice.
  • Implement your decisions regarding scheduling, communication, and documentation into agency policy to ensure that staff utilize the same procedures, tools, and forms for compliance. Be sure to include therapists in this decision and policy-making process.

The January issue of Homecare DIRECTION will further discuss this new requirement and provide more guidance for compliance.  To learn more about this monthly newsletter for clinical managers, click here.
