Tip: Relationships with federal healthcare beneficiaries

Compliance Monitor, October 24, 2007

Hospitals may not offer valuable items or services to Medicare or Medicaid beneficiaries to attract their business, according to the OIG. In this regard, the OIG advises hospitals to familiarize themselves with the OIG's August 2002 Special Advisory Bulletin on Offering Gifts and Other Inducements to Beneficiaries. This bulletin generally states any gifts or free services to beneficiaries should not exceed $10-per-item and $50 annual limits unless a provider's practices fit within an exception (as implemented by regulations) or are the subject of a favorable advisory opinion.
