Michigan patient recruiter pleads guilty to Medicare fraud
Compliance Monitor, April 25, 2012
A Detroit-area patient recruiter pled guilty for his participation in a $2.5 million Medicare fraud scheme, according to an April 18 Department of Justice press release.
Daron Elder acted as a patient recruiter for Detroit-based Blessed Medical Center. In exchange for cash kickbacks, Elder convinced Medicare beneficiaries to submit to medically unnecessary diagnostic tests. Blessed Medical Center then used the beneficiaries’ Medicare ID numbers to submit false claims.
Elder faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine for his participation in the scheme.
