Florida man admits role in $200 million Medicare fraud scheme

Compliance Monitor, March 21, 2012

A Florida man pleaded guilty for his role in a Medicare fraud scheme that resulted in more than $200 million in false claims billed to Medicare, according to a March 13 Department of Justice press release.

Mathis Moore, who worked as a patient broker for Miami-based American Therapeutic Corporation and American Sleep Institute, received cash kickbacks in exchange for providing these companies with Medicare patients who did not meet the criteria of medical necessity for the services billed. Consequently, Medicare was fraudulently billed $17 million by American Therapeutic Corporation.

Moore will be sentenced on May 29 and faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison and $250,000 in fines.
