U.S. District Judge Joan A. Lenard of the Southern District of Florida sentenced two patient recruiters, nurse, and administrator of a Miami based home healthcare company to prison, according a December 19 Department of Justice press release.

Patient recruiters Fidel Castro and Barbara Gonzalez, who received prison sentences of 30 and six months respectively, were also ordered to pay a total of $950,000 in restitution. Administrator Licet Diaz received the longest sentence of 87 months in prison and was ordered to pay $7.8 million in restitution while nurse Ignacio Angulo received an 18 month prison sentence and ordered to pay $190,000 in restitution.

According to court documents, from January 2006 until March 2009, Castro, Gonzalez, Diaz, and Angulo operated ABC Home Health Care Inc. and billed Medicare for home health and therapy services that were not provided or were medically unnecessary. Medicare was subsequently billed for approximately $8.5 million in fraudulent claims.
