OIG semiannual report to Congress summarizes accomplishments, shortcomings

Highlights of the OIG’s semiannual report to Congress for the six-month period ending in September include Medicare Fraud Strike Force accomplishments, specifically charges filed against 70 individuals or entities, 77 convictions, and $160.8 million in investigative receivables.

The strike force also executed an eight-city operation that resulted in charges filed against 91 individuals for their alleged participation in Medicare fraud schemes involving approximately $295 million in false billing. The OIG report also addresses activity pertaining to the False Claims Act, the use of antipsychotic drug claims for elderly nursing home residents, changes in skilled nursing facilities billing, grants fraud prevention and investigations, and weaknesses in departmental oversight of e-PHI.
