Tip: Screen new employees

Compliance Monitor, August 10, 2011

The OIG suggests that hospitals carefully screen all new employees. This screening could include a thorough background investigation and reference check. The employee application should specifically require the applicant to disclose any criminal conviction or exclusion action. Hospital policies should prohibit the hiring of any individual who is listed as debarred, excluded, or otherwise ineligible for participation in federal healthcare programs.
