Houston woman admits to healthcare fraud

Compliance Monitor, June 22, 2011

Simone Ball, 24, owner of Preferred Plus Medical Supply in Houston, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud, according to a Department of Justice (DOJ) press release.

Ball used Preferred Plus to submit claims for durable medical equipment that were medically unnecessary or never provided, according to the DOJ. Many of the orthotic devices were supposed to be used to treat arthritis-related conditions, but were not medically necessary or appropriate for such conditions.

From August through December 2008, Ball used Preferred Plus to submit approximately $654,227 in fraudulent claims to Medicare. She faces up to 10 years in prison.
