NY physical therapist admits to defrauding Medicare

A Brooklyn physical therapist pleaded guilty for his role in submitting false claims to Medicare for physical therapy services that were medically unnecessary and never provided, according to a Department of Justice (DOJ) press release.

Aleksandr Kharkover, 49, pleaded guilty to five counts of healthcare fraud.  According to the DOJ, Kharkover submitted approximately $11.9 million in false claims to Medicare. Kharkover allegedly hired individuals who were not certified as physical therapy assistants to purportedly provide physical therapy to Medicare beneficiaries.   

Kharkover faces a maximum of 10 years in prison for each count of healthcare fraud.
