Eight nurses sentenced for Medicare fraud

Compliance Monitor, February 9, 2011

Eight Miami-area nurses will serve time in prison for their roles in an $18.7 million Medicare fraud scheme involving home healthcare, according to a Departments of Justice (DOJ) press release.

The nurses each pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud. U.S. District Court Judge Ursula Ungaro sentenced them to terms ranging from five to 30 months in prison, with additional supervised release.

The scheme revolved around two home healthcare companies, Florida Home Health Care Providers Inc. and Santos ABC Home Health Inc. According to the DOJ, the defendants falsified patient files to make it appear that Medicare beneficiaries qualified for services from Florida Home Health or ABC that were prescribed by Jorge Dieppa, MD. The defendants knew that the services were not medically necessary and/or not rendered.
