Compliance Monitor, January 19, 2011

University Medical Center in Tucson, AZ, fired three clinical support staff members and a contracted nurse for inappropriately accessing medical records connected to the supermarket shooting that killed six and wounded 13 including U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D- AZ), according to the UMC website.

UMC does not believe any of the employees publicly released confidential patient information, but the families of all the affected patients were notified. UMC has a zero tolerance policy for privacy breaches and uses sophisticated technology to detect inappropriate access to patient information.
