Compliance Monitor, October 27, 2010

A Houston-based patient recruiter pleaded guilty to her role in a $5.2 million Medicare fraud scheme, according to a Department of Justice (DOJ) press release.

Cynthia Garza-Williams, 49, recruited patients to Family Healthcare Group; a purported home health and skilled nursing company, which allegedly billed Medicare for medically unnecessary treatments or treatments that were never provided. Garza-Williams admitted to giving cash-filled envelops to a physician to induce signatures on claims for unnecessary home healthcare services, according to the DOJ.

Garza-Williams faces the maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
