Indianapolis physician indicted on improper injection and drug prescription charges

An Indianapolis grand jury indicted former physician Kamal Tiwari for defrauding Medicare, Indiana Medicaid, and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield for supplying approximately $22 million in unlawful injections and infusions according to a Department of Justice (DOJ) press release.

While working at several pain management and anesthesiology clinics in Bloomingtion, IN, Tiwari, allegedly prescribed controlled substances to make patients dependent on these types of services, according to the DOJ.

At trial, 16 former patients of Tiwari recalled the specific treatments and drug prescriptions used in Tiwari’s healthcare fraud scheme. Tiwari faces several years’ imprisonment and fines for counts of healthcare fraud, healthcare fraud resulting in serious bodily injury, and 11 counts of unlawful drug distribution.
