Attorney General and HHS secretary urges education and fraud and abuse avoidance for Medicare beneficiaries

On June 8, Attorney General Eric Holder and Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Kathleen Sebelius sent a letter to state attorneys general urging their cooperation with HHS and law enforcement officials to educate seniors and other Medicare beneficiaries on preventing fraud and abuse scams, according to a Department of Justice press release.

The letter outlines education and outreach efforts including:

  • Cutting the improper payment rate, which tracks fraud, waste, and abuse in the Medicare Fee for service program, in half by 2012
  • Holding a series of regional fraud prevention summits around the country
  • Planning healthcare fraud task force meetings to exchange information with partners in the public and private sectors
  • Doubling the size of the Senior Medicare Patrol system
  • Organizing a Summer 2010 educational media campaign to educate Medicare beneficiaries on fraud and abuse protection
