Houston physician and two citizens convicted in Medicare fraud scheme

Compliance Monitor, June 9, 2010

A federal jury in the Southern District of Texas convicted Howard Grant, MD, and two Houston citizens for their roles in a multi-million dollar fraud scheme, according to a Department of Justice (DOJ) press release.

Grant allowed Doris Vinitski, owner of the Houston-area durable medical equipment (DME) company Onward Medical Supply (OMS), and coconspirators to submit fraudulent claims to Medicare that identified Grant as the prescribing physician for the DME.

Houstonians, Clinton Lee and Obisike Nwankwo acted as delivery drivers for OMS, transporting medically unnecessary power wheelchairs, orthotics, and other DME to Medicare beneficiaries that did not require the equipment, according to the DOJ.

Seven others involved in OMS’s Medicare fraud scheme previously pleaded guilty for various roles, including Vinitski.
