CA patient recruiter sentenced in DME fraud scheme

Compliance Monitor, May 26, 2010

Maria Nela Moreno will serve 366 days in prison and pay $110,000 in restitution for her role in a durable medical equipment (DME) fraud scheme, according to a Department of Justice (DOJ) press release.

Moreno, 57, traveled to senior living communities soliciting high-end power wheelchairs and other DME under the guise of a Medicare agent, according to the DOJ. Moreno procured Medicare beneficiary ID cards and insurance numbers which she provided to a Los Angeles area medical clinic to create fraudulent power wheelchair prescriptions. The prescriptions were then sold to various DME supply companies in the area.

According to the DOJ, Moreno received cash kickbacks for every power wheelchair the companies billed to Medicare.
