Miami trio face fines, jail time for roles in HIV/Aids infusion clinic fraud scheme

Compliance Monitor, April 28, 2010

Three Miami residents pleaded guilty to a $5.8 million Medicare fraud scheme stemming from their involvement with a HIV/Aids infusion clinic, according to a Department of Justice (DOJ) press release.

Maria Volero Marrero, 48, admitted to owning and operating Tendercare Medical Center Inc., where she submitted false claims to Medicare for medically unnecessary and unrendered services. According to the DOJ, Marrero paid kickbacks to patient recruiters Lawrence Humes, 57, and Keith Humes, 53. The recruiters then paid kickbacks to Medicare beneficiaries for their Medicare numbers and signatures on sham files.
Medicare paid Tendercare approximately $2.7 million of the $5.8 million submitted claims.
