Obama asks HHS to expand hospital visitation rights to gay and lesbian couples and others

Compliance Monitor, April 21, 2010

On April 16, President Obama issued a memo to the Health and Human Services (HHS) agency, requesting the agency permit same sex couples the same visitation rights given to heterosexual partners in Medicare and Medicaid hospitals.

The memorandum requests that participating hospitals may not deny visitation privileges to patients that designate visitors even when they are not immediate family members. The issuance also requests that patient visitors not be withheld visitation rights “on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability.”
