NC governor announces new Medicare waste and fraud prevention plan

Compliance Monitor, March 31, 2010

North Carolina governor Beverly Perdue announced a plan last week that will potentially save tens of millions dollars, according to press release from Perdue’s office.

Perdue’s plan involves creating new Medicaid SWAT teams and better use of technology to detect and prevent abuse. A new software system will analyze Medicare claims and identify suspicious trends amongst the 2 million Medicaid patients and 60,000 Medicaid providers in the state. Suspicious claims will be turned over to specially trained investigators who are part of the SWAT teams.

Perdue called for a doubling in the size of North Carolina’s anti-fraud unit, which helped to recover over $52 million in fraudulent claims last year.
