MA hospital pays $2.8 million to settle false claims

Mercy Hospital Inc. (d/b/a/ Mercy Medical Center) of Springfield MA will pay the United States approximately $2.8 million to settle claims of violating the False Claims Act, according to a Department of Justice (DOJ) press release.
Mercy Medical Center allegedly failed to document the minimum number of hours for rehabilitation therapy required under Medicare guidelines. In a disclosure to the HHS OIG, Mercy admitted they could not prove they provided the required level of therapy for inpatient rehabilitation hospitals required by Medicare. The settlement resulted from the company’s disclosure.
