Tip: Conducting "walk-around" interviews

Compliance Monitor, February 10, 2010

A great way to obtain information about the risks facing your organization is to conduct a “walk-around” interview with department managers and staff members. Whether your hospital is large or small, follow these steps to prepare for the interview:

  • Obtain an organizational chart detailing seating arrangements and to whom in your facility the interviewee reports
  • Notify the staff member’s supervisor of the upcoming interviews, the purpose of the interview, and what you will do with the information gathered
  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of the interviewee to further assess whether the duties of the individual match up with their stated job description
  • “Walk-around” interviews are disruptive, so have your questions prepared and remind the interviewee of the importance of the interview
Once you understand the interviewee’s job function, the department’s work flow, and have identified an interview time, conduct the interview. Don’t forget to reiterate that all answers are confidential.
