Detroit physical therapist pleads guilty to fraud

Compliance Monitor, January 27, 2010

Detroit physical therapist Jessica Vigil pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court for her role in a home healthcare fraud scheme and faces a $250,000 fine and 10 year prison sentence, according to a Department of Justice (DOJ) press release.

Vigil, 34, began working as a licensed physical therapist for All American Home Care, Inc. (All American) in September 2008. All American purported to provide physical and occupational therapy services and created fictitious therapy files documenting the fake therapy sessions, the DOJ said.

According to the DOJ, Vigil admitted in her plea to falsely signing start of care packages, recertification forms, and discharge papers. In her time at All American, Vigil signed forms totaling approximately $2.375 million in false claims paid by Medicare.
