Corporate Compliance

Tip: Effective compliance program elements

Compliance Monitor, January 13, 2010

The Office of Inspector General (OIG) issues an annual, autumnal Work Plan detailing various projects and focus areas the OIG will monitor in the coming year. Although the Work Plan is something to adhere and look forward to, there are several guidelines you should consistently employ on a daily basis. Take heed of the following compliance strategies:
  • Demonstrate your hospital’s strong commitment to honest and responsible corporate conduct
  • Provide a more accurate view of fraud and abuse relations between employee and contractor
  • Identify and prevent criminal and unethical conduct
  • Tailor your hospital’s compliance program to its specific needs
  • Improve quality of patient care
  • Create a networking compliance program that communicates fraud and abuse related issues
  • Develop a methodology that encourages employees to report potential problems
  • Develop procedures that thoroughly investigate alleged misconduct by any employee within the hospital
  • Initiate swift and appropriate corrective action
  • Minimize incorrect reimbursement through early detection and reporting
