MO nursing homes and owner pay $1.6 million for false claims

Compliance Monitor, January 13, 2010

Five Missouri nursing homes operated by Texas corporation, Cathedral Rock, and its majority owner, C. Kent Harrington pleaded guilty to submitting fraudulent claims to Medicare and Medicaid and providing insufficient care to nursing home residents, according to a Department of Justice (DOJ) press release.
Including the falsification of medical records, the DOJ alleges Cathedral Rock patients suffered from malnutrition, dehydration, and pressure sores. The DOJ reports that some patients wandered out of the homes unsupervised, and others did not receive their medications.
The five nursing homes and Harrington will pay the U.S. over $1.6 million in criminal fines and penalties to resolve fraudulent submissions to Medicare and Medicaid.
