OIG reports more than $2 billion in recoveries this year

In the its “Semiannual Report to Congress,” the OIG estimated it recovered $2.2 billion from fraud investigations for the first half of the 2008 fiscal year.

The OIG attributes an estimated $1.1 billion to audit related recoveries, and the remaining recoveries due additional investigations. Any additional savings from OIG recommendations will be presented in the next semiannual report, which is due at the end of the 2008 fiscal year.

The OIG also reported the exclusion of 1,291 individuals and organizations for fraud or abuse of federal healthcare programs; 293 criminal actions against individuals or organizations; and 142 civil actions.
