Medicare identifies priciest drugs
Case Management Insider, January 12, 2016
A new analysis by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has found only 40 medications resulted in nearly three-quarters of physician and outpatient drug spending last year.
“The top Part D drugs with highest total spending were Abilify, Advair Diskus, Crestor, Nexium, and Sovaldi,” stated Medicare in a written release. “The top five Part B drugs with highest total spending were aflibercept, ranibizumab, pegfilgrastim, imfliximab, and rituximab. Each of these drugs contributed more than $1 billion in spending for the Medicare Part B program.”
Each of the Part D drugs had total drug spending of more than $2 billion in 2014, except Sovaldi, which was introduced in 2013. Similarly, the Part B drugs contributed to more than $1 billion in spending.
