Data use for hospital calculations may be flawed

Case Management Insider, December 29, 2015

A new study by researchers at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine shows that data in from The Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) may be inaccurate, resulting in unfair reimbursement rates for hospitals.

Government bodies use NIS to set a hospitals' risk for readmission or surgical complications. The recent data significantly underreports health risks such as obesity or alcohol use, among other factors. This may be the case because coders don’t always include the information.
