Notification of observation patients now mandatory

Do you have a Medicare patient who has been on observation status in your hospital for more than 24 hours? A new federal law now requires your organization to notify the patient of his or her status within 36 hours of the time he or she starts receiving outpatient services.

The goal of this regulation, known as the NOTICE Act, is to ensure patients understand how they will be billed for their treatment and that there will be no unpleasant surprises.
