CDC studies most common causes of pneumonia in Americans

Hospitalizations related to pneumonia cost some $10 billion every year in the United States.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently investigated to find out what triggers most of these cases, and found that more often than not, it’s a virus not bacteria that leads to this diagnosis—underscoring the importance of preventive measures, such as a flu vaccine. But the study, which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine, also found that better diagnostic tools are needed because in many cases the laboratory wasn’t able to determine the cause of the pneumonia.
