Study: Hospitals not always at fault for readmissions

A new study to be published in Health Services Research shows that when a patient is readmitted to the hospital, it’s often not only the hospital’s fault. 

More than half of the time, patients with acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, and pneumonia come back to the hospital due to “community factors,” which are outside the hospital’s control. Study authors say that this should prompt a reconsideration of CMS’ current readmission penalties.
