Resident hour changes has no effect on hospital readmissions

A law that caps the number of hours resident physicians can work may have created changes for student doctors, but it didn’t affect the readmission or death rate among Medicare patients.

Some predicted that when the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education placed limits on resident hours that it would either cause more readmissions and deaths because residents would be less available or that problems would improve because residents would be less exhausted. Neither occurred. Instead, University of Pennsylvania and The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia researchers found there was no change.
