Compliance Monitor, January 12, 2011

The Massachusetts Medicaid Fraud Division recovered $66 million in 2010, according to a press release from the Attorney General’s Office. The figure broke the previous record by more than $14.3 million, which was set in 2009.

Some high-profile cases include a $22 million settlement recovered from 12 pharmaceutical manufacturers and a $4.6 million trial verdict against the thirteenth pharmaceutical manufacturer in the case, Merck & Co., Inc. (f/k/a Schering-Plough Corporation), and its subsidiaries Schering Corporation and Warrick Pharmaceuticals Corporation.

Meanwhile, in North Carolina, Medicaid fraud investigators recovered more than $53 million, according to a Department of Justice (DOJ) press release.

North Carolina’s largest recovery in 2010 came from a $25.5 million settlement with Pfizer, which resolved charges that the company allegedly paid illegal kickbacks and marketed drugs for unapproved uses.
