Case Study: Winter Storm Jonas
Consult your emergency management plan when facing an impending storm, and update this plan with lessons learned after each storm to avoid grappling with problems that may already have solutions. This is just one of the lessons reinforced for hospitals that were impacted by Winter Storm Jonas (aka “Snowzilla”) back in January 2016.
Q&A: Smoke, flames, and wildfires
In November 2018 California suffered its deadliest wildfire in history, the Camp Fire. This single fire killed dozens of people, destroyed 10,500 homes, and burned an area the size of Chicago. Two weeks after the initial blaze began, roughly 1,000 people were believed still missing, and authorities were saying the fire wasn’t done burning yet.
Human trafficking response program at Dignity Health
In 2014, Dignity Health kicked off its Human Trafficking Response (HTR) Program with the intent of identifying and aiding trafficking victims. Within a year, it identified at least 31 people with high or moderate indicators that they were victims of human trafficking, and that number has grown with each year since.
Treating violence and abuse victims with PEARR
Holly Austin Gibbs has been the director of Dignity Health’s Human Trafficking Response Program since 2015. She is also a survivor of child sex trafficking. Rescued at 14 by law enforcement, she was taken to an emergency department for assessment.
