IL hospitals contribute over $4.6 billion in community benefits

According to a report released by the Illinois Hospital Association, Illinois hospitals contributed over $4.6 billion in community benefits between 2009 and 2010. This was an increase of 26% since 2005.

The report looks at 109 hospitals in the state which are required to to file community benefit reports with the state. The benefits identified in the report include free and discounted care, shortfalls absorbed by hospitals due to underpayments by government agencies, and costs absorbed by hospitals for healthcare services rendered to patients unable to pay for their care.
