Joint Commission announces diabetes Speak Up campaign

Accreditation Connection, November 5, 2010

The Joint Commission announced this week a new brochure, as part of its Speak Up™ campaign, targeting the risks of diabetes. The brochure, written with the support of the American Association of Diabetes Educators, American Diabetes Association, and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, specifically speaks to precautions diabetics can take in the event they need to be hospitalized.

“Diabetes: Five ways to be active in your care at the hospital” provides advice on asking questions regarding medications, avoiding infections, and plans for recovery once the patient has returned home from his or her hospital stay.

"Going to the hospital presents special challenges for people with diabetes, but being prepared will help them to be active participants in their care. It will also help patients ensure that their diabetes is appropriately monitored and controlled while they are hospitalized," Mark R. Chassin, MD, MPP, MPH, president of The Joint Commission, said in an official announcement.

The brochure can be found online here.
