CMS updates requirements for ordering respiratory services

Accreditation Connection, October 15, 2010

In order to comply with changes to CMS Conditions of Participation for hospitals regarding who may order respiratory services, The Joint Commission has implemented changes to its Provision of Care standards.

CMS issued a final rule change on August 16, 2010, for 42 CFR 482.56: Rehabilitation Services and 42 CFR 482.57: Respiratory Services. The rule allows a qualified, licensed practitioner who is responsible for the patient and acting within the scope of their practice to order respiratory or rehabilitation services.

Because of this, PC.02.01.03 has been changed in order to comply with CMS requirements. Element of Performance (EP) 14 previously limited ordering respiratory services to an MD or DO. This EP has been deleted, and requirements for respiratory services will now be surveyd under EP 1 of the same standard.

The changes were effective October 1, 2010 and will be reflected in the next update to the complete accreditation manual.
