Effective October 1, 2013, CMS adopted a new criteria for inpatient status but has limited its contractors to very specific audits of the new criteria. The Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs), who are the primary claims processing contractors and main contact for providers, are conducting limited prepayment "probe and educate" audits on the new criteria as well as new requirements for physician orders and certifications.
