Communication with practitioners

Anne Roberts, CPMSM, CPCS, is the director of medical affairs at Children’s Medical Center of  Dallas, where she oversees the medical administration, graduate medical education, and medical staff services departments.

Dear credentialing colleague:

In my role as director of medical affairs at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas, one of my responsibilities is to oversee the majority of the communication that is circulated to medical staff members and physicians participating in training programs.

Ask the expert: How often should your medical staff conduct OPPE?
The Joint Commission’s standards for ongoing professional practice evaluation (OPPE) require a systematic and timely review of performance data. The most practical approach is to distribute the report every six months. This provides physicians with four reports in a two-year cycle and gives him or her a reasonable opportunity for improvement during that period if an indicator is outside the acceptable level.

Tip of the week: Give those who can't attend meetings a chance to provide input
MSPs are commonly asked to attend or take notes in medical staff meetings. If you are asked to help organize such a meeting, it is important to include those who cannot attend the meeting due to scheduling conflicts.
