Focus on quality indicators to reduce racial disparity

When Congress approved MQSA in 1994, the healthcare community hailed it as a means of ensuring the quality of mammography nationwide. But major variations in quality still exist despite the law, says David Ansell, MD, chief medical officer at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. The experiences of black women in Chicago clearly illustrate why facilities should view MQSA as a starting point when it comes to raising the bar on quality, Ansell says.

Low-income women skip annual exams due to cost
This is the estimated amount of money women who participated in the federal Breast and Cervical Health Program (BCHP) spend on costs associated with the mammogram itself, such as transportation, childcare and parking.

Although Elizabeth Wende hasn’t seen a drop in patient volume, managers at other facilities have, Wade says.

Digital mammography and the fatty breast
Although digital mammography may have advantages for some women, particularly younger women with dense breasts, the 2005 DMIST trial hinted that for women with breasts primarily composed of fatty tissue, analog equipment might produce better images.

Achieve printing perfection when dealing with digital
Many facilities that make the switch to digital imaging assume that hardcopy prints are a thing of the past.
