Caring for children: Leave no room for medication errors
Medication errors are a growing concern in healthcare organizations among staff members, patients, and families, particularly among vulnerable neonatal and pediatric populations. A recent study in Pediatrics found that one in 15 hospitalized children experience a medication error, and The Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO) recently issued a Sentinel Event alert warning healthcare providers about the prevalence of dangerous medication errors with pediatric patients. Medication errors can happen for several reasons, such as lack of communication, drug mislabeling, technology malfunctions, or frequent distractions, which are all components of human error.
 
Involve frontline staff with an ambassador committee

After Lakewood Hospital applied for ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) designation, we wanted our frontline staff to be active in the MRP process, but participation was low. After consideration, our leadership team identified a way to increase staff involvement: an MRP ambassador committee. Selecting committee members The MRP ambassador committee was developed as a way to help interested nurses learn more about the journey toward designation, and so those nurses could help educate their colleagues along the way.
