CAP reviews: Analysis of the impact two years later
Initial CAP inspections showed less than stellar results due to lack of objectivity and focus, says Lucia Berte, president of Laboratories Made Better! P.C., in Broomfield, CO. Inspections were marred by informal procedures and tainted by tales of favoritism between facilities and inspectors. So, during the past two years, CAP changed its inspection standards. Previously announced surveys are now performed on random, unexpected dates. Neither the name of the organization being examined nor the name of the inspection team leader is revealed.
 
Provide adequate protective equipment for employees
Ensuring that employees wear their protective equipment represents one of the most pressing problems in labs today, says Terry Jo Gile, MT(ASCP), MA, Ed, Safety Lady®, laboratory safety expert in North Fort Myers, FL. Although your lab probably knows about the requirements, make sure your enforcement of the rules has not relaxed. For example, too many laboratory employees don't wear required protective foot wear, says Gile.
