Take a big step toward falls prevention
With patient safety at the forefront and the new Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services ruling, which takes effect in October, stating Medicare will not pay for treatment of injuries resulting from preventable patient falls, staff educators are looking for quick, effective strategies to reduce fall rates at their hospitals and keep all of their patients safe from injuries. "Every hospital should have a falls prevention plan," says Shirley Frost, RN, MSN, director of education at Berlin (WI) Memorial Hospital.
Science and simulation in the clinical setting
"The best route to learning is doing." This is often the mantra of nursing staff educators, who see the positive results of hands-on training. As noted in the biweekly magazine Legislative Network for Nurses, "Simulation technology may become the new wave in nursing education." To give its nurses and physicians a chance to work together on patient scenarios in a safe, controlled environment, a children's hospital in Utah has developed a state-of-the-art simulation laboratory.
