Examining your facility's FPPE monitoring options

There are two ways to view the decision-making process. One way is to view it as a burden, another task that must be accomplished before you move on to more meaningful work. The other way is to view it as an opportunity to improve the current situation. An effective medical staff office should approach decisions about its monitoring process with the second point of view in mind. In January, Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO) standard MS 4.30 went into effect, requiring Joint Commission-accredited organizations to validate the competency of newly privileged practitioners through a focused professional practice evaluation (FPPE).

Build a strong foundation to ensure future success
This first article in our three-part Planning for Success series examines the importance of hiring and training MSPs. We explore the similarities and differences for those working in CVOs and in hospital-based medical staff offices. Future articles in the series will focus on maximizing the resources allocated for your office and planning for the future. How did you enter the medical staff services profession? Whatever led you to knock on the door of the medical staff services world, someone on the other side knew that you had the right stuff to be let in.

The value of NCQA certification for CVOs

CVOs come in several shapes and sizes and provide a variety of services to their customers. If you think the unifying factor among successful CVOs is that they are all NCQA-certified, you are wrong. Certification is one criterion that customers should check when shopping for a CVO. Other criteria include the price and scope of services, accessibility, and turnaround time for primary source verifications. Certification is one of the options considered when a CVO decides how the organization will manage itself.

California disaster plan is step in new direction
California's Department of Public Health recently released the nation's first comprehensive guide regarding how hospitals, other healthcare facilities, and local health departments should respond to a sudden increased demand for services following a catastrophic event. According to the Department of Public Health, organizations can use the document, Standards and Guidelines for Healthcare Surge during Emergencies, in situations such as a natural disaster, a terrorist attack, or an influenza pandemic.
