Connecting the competency dots for the patient's sake
On your busiest days, it may seem like your mission is to cross as many items off of your credentialing and privileging to-do list as possible. However, your profession demands more than that-the verifications that you do ultimately improve the quality of care that your organization provides. One way to improve care is by enhancing physicians' communication skills with their patients. MSPs can help facilitate this in their hospitals by incorporating The Joint Commission's (formerly JCAHO) National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG) with the delineation of privileges by aligning Goal #13 with standard MS.4.15.

Temporary privileges
Temporary privileges fill a need for medical staffs that wish to grant privileges to a practitioner but don't want to commit to privileges linked to a standard two-year appointment term. However, there are as many different types of needs as there are types of hospitals, and each organization holds its own view of temporary privileges. The common thread that ties the various views together is that quality is never sacrificed for the sake of speed or convenience.

What you don't know about online databanks can cost you time and money
One of the characteristics that separates good MSPs from great MSPs is the ability to maximize verification requests to gain the most information in the least amount of time. This isn't a more-information-is-always-better philosophy-it's still important to conduct focused verifications-but knowing where you can turn for extra data when you need them is an invaluable lesson to learn.
