Florida Supreme Court makes peer review transparent
Florida physicians might be skittish about participating in peer review activities now that the Florida Supreme Court has made its final decision regarding Amendment 7 of The Constitution of the State of Florida, which makes all peer review information discoverable to the public. And physicians in Florida aren't the only ones who may be nervous-physicians across the country wonder if their states will follow Florida's lead. What is Amendment 7? Laura Yaeger, an attorney at Fleming & Associates, LLP, in Houston, says that, in its original form, Amendment 7 allows all Florida patients to access all peer review information and documentation of any state-licensed physician regarding adverse medical events.
Competency of the month: Measuring professionalism
Editor's note: In the July MSB, we discussed how Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville is measuring and improving physician communication skills. This month, we take a look at how the University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS) in Philadelphia is assessing professionalism. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education/Joint Commission's six core competencies are: 1. Patient care 2. Medical knowledge 3. Practice-based learning and improvement 4. Interpersonal communication skills 5. Professionalism 6. Systems-based practice
Simplifying the medical staff structure
Transitioning from a department structure to a clinical service structure requires more than simply swapping the word "department" with "clinical service" in the hospital's bylaws. Marna Sorensen, medical staff services manager at Portneuf Regional Medical Center in Pocatello, ID, says that even though switching to clinical services has saved her medical staff significant time and effort, the medical staff office (MSO) spent nearly one year educating physicians about the change and how it would benefit them.
