Sounding the alarm on disruptive behavior to meet Joint Commission standards
We all know that disruptive physician behavior creates a hostile work environment, but now there's proof that such behavior contributes to medical errors, poor patient satisfaction, and higher cost of care. The Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO) issued a Sentinel Event Alert July 9 citing an Institute for Safe Medication Practices study. Measuring the six core competencies to comply with FPPE and OPPE requirements

Editor's note: This article is the last in our series aimed at providing medical staffs with information to adequately measure the six core competencies to assess physician competence. When the The Joint Commission adopted the six core competencies-which were originally developed by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-it failed to specify which expectations would provide the basis to measure competency. Creating win-win physician-hospital arrangements
As physician reimbursement decreases and the cost of running an independent practice increases, physicians are constantly looking for new ways to diversify their revenue, and joint ventures are increasingly attractive options. Many physicians maintain their privileges and membership on their hospital's medical staff while developing a profitable business on the side, but heated competition can lead hospitals and physicians to make decisions that leave one party out in the cold.
