Transparency, job satisfaction among topics at Leape roundtables
The need for healthcare transparency and job satisfaction were among the topics discussed as part of the Lucian Leape Institute (LLI) at the National Patient Safety Foundation's (NPSF) Roundtable and Inaugural Gala in February. A series of roundtables, led by a board of nationally known leaders in patient safety, were held to foster discussion about the five major themes to be included in the LLI's upcoming report, Transformational Concepts for Patient Safety. More than 300 attendees were given the chance to discuss issues and possible solutions and provide input and feedback for incorporation into the report. The sessions were led by the founding members of the LLI and centered on the following hot-button topics in the patient safety arena.

Joint Commission proposes many changes to Goal #7 for 2009
Editor's note: This is the first in a series of articles about The Joint Commission's proposed 2009 National Patient Safety Goals (NPSGs). The Joint Commission's proposed 2009 NPSGs include significant and specific changes to Goal #7. This is the second part of this column; the first part appeared in the March BOPS. Many of the issues regarding the supervisor's role in limiting human error will be related to the training of the work force. Let's look at what is involved with ensuring that we have a qualified and consistent work force.

'Leaps' to safety include public reporting
Computerized physician order entry (CPOE), intensivists, and evidence-based hospital referrals are all necessary standards for building a safer hospital environment, according to The Leapfrog Group, a nationwide organization created to increase safe and cost-efficient patient care in hospitals. Public reporting on these standards, says Leapfrog's former CEO Karen Linscott, is also a necessary part of creating that safer environment. "A community has a right to know," Linscott says, adding that hospitals can benefit just as much as its patients. Reporting to Leapfrog's online public survey, she says, can carry benefits such as good press, available benchmarking information, and possible reimbursement, depending on the healthcare plan.
