| CMS confirms limits on Part A qualifying hospital stay |
| As billers know, one of the so-called "technical" benefit eligibility criteria for Medicare Part A skilled nursing facility (SNF) coverage is that the resident must have a qualifying three-day inpatient hospital stay.
The basic rules for what constitutes a three-day stay and what constitutes a hospital have been in effect since July 1966, according to recently issued CMS Transmittal 57, available at www.cms.hhs.gov/transmittals/downloads/R57BP.pdf.
However, the full set of instructions wasn't implemented in the Medicare Benefit Policy Manual until December 14, 2006. |
