| Help staff handle stress by boosting resilience |
| Working in healthcare is dangerous for your health, says Daniel Johnson, PhD, staff psychologist at Mercer Health Systems in Macon, GA. The profession is dangerous because of the enormity of the daily challenges staff face (e.g., the responsibility of caring for seriously ill people, lack of support, shift conflicts, resource constraints, etc.). These daily challenges can build up and effect staff’s resilience to stress and strain.
Resiliency is the ability to bounce back from the bends and stretches of life, said Johnson in his presentation entitled "Getting the most from your staff: Create and maintain a resilient work team," during the 2005 Nursing Management Congress held in October in Orlando, FL. A resilient person can face obstacles, bounce back, and move forward.
The daily challenges experienced by nurses can develop into stress, which has a negative effect on people’s health. However, if you help your staff develop skills of resiliency, they will be able to lessen the effects of stress, says Johnson |
